I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned Scrivener on my blog before. It’s writing software designed for writers. It started out as a Mac app but was recently ported to windows.
It is the best software product I’ve ever used. Ever.
If you’re a developer, or have ever spent any serious time coding, then you’ll understand why it’s good when I say that it is an IDE for writers. In the old days we used to write huge bits of code but then we figured out how to break those big programs into smaller chunks. Scrivener allows you to do the same with big bits of writing. The end result of your writing will be a long piece of text but the way you get there is by building up a structure of many small pieces. Scrivener helps yo do that.
There is only 1thing missing from Scrivener. It’s a keystroke that was hugely convenient in word, although I suspect few word users even know it exists. The keystroke is alt-shift-up and what it does is move the current paragraph up a line. It’d be nice to have it’s cousin alt-shift-down, too, I suppose. That’s the only thing I miss, as a spare-time-professional-writer, from ms word.
So … if you write big documents, try scrivener. They have a very generous trial download, awesome tutorials, and shockingly low prices.
