Text editors ...

Help!  I need to do some text editing for my book ... but I've not used a text editor for writing for years and years and years.  Essentially, I want something simple that works a bit like ms word.  I'm going to use it for editing / writing my novel ... not code ... so that might limit my options.

I use windows ... do you have any suggestions, my friends?

[Note to Rob Lally: I'm not buying a fecking Mac]

If you don't want Word but you want something that works reliably like it, OpenOffice.org on Windows works pretty well and you can always save in Word if you have a publisher who requires it. You can save in PDF too.

Then of course you need to make sure that you backup to other machines and a CD-ROM and also get a free account where you can back up onto the net. Windows Live SkyDrive should be enough for you, and you can recover it by a browser from anywhere, but don't have to share with others.

Doctor, doctor, I've got a problem .. but I'm not going to take the medicine you recommend.

When I'm working on Windows I prefer to use http://www.e-texteditor.com ; which as an editor is pretty good, but also has the very neat feature of tracking every change you make an allowing you to roll back to the version of your choice. A feature I often find useful when I'm trying out different versions of a piece of text.

Of course, you could ...

As you are not going to buy a mac, here is the next best thing to TextMate on a Mac: EditPlus2 for windoze

P.S. Then if you ever do want to write code, or edit web sites, the edit/ftp integration is outstanding (again, for the windoze platform).

I like EditPlus http://www.editplus.com/. Costs a tiny amount, but works well.

Hey Clarke

I use google apps which is fairly simple to use and you can access your stuff wherever you are.

See you tomorrow!
