I don't normally have a problem with adverts on the web. If I am honest, sometimes I even like them - if they're relevant to me then they are useful (which the google text ads often are).
And really, they're a small price to pay for good content. Scott Adams, of Dilbert fame, for instance, has just changed his RSS feed so that I have to click to visit his webstie and view the adds. I actually make a deliberate effort to focus on anywhere but the adds but I respect his decision and I am thrilled that I get to read his adds.
But today The Telegraph - a newspaper I read frequently and one which should know better - has just started featuring very annoying flash adverts for some well know mouse and keyboard company (whose name I honestly can't remember) and the ads SHOUT AT ME. That's right, they actually SHOUT OUT WORDS at me. This has happened to me about a twenty times today, alone, so I've decided to get rid of all adverts. I nearly decided to switch news papers, but instead I decided to click the ads a half dozen times (which I hope costs them something) and then I've installed the firefox adblock and flashblock extensions.
It's a shame. All it takes is a little respect and a little thought and perhaps the telegraph could SERVE ME, by serving me, relevant and polite adverts.
rant off.
