When I was growing up in Nelson, New Zealand the local radio station had a "children's hour" every Sunday morning. The, I mean THE, highlight was when they played the dramatised version of the great comedian Spike Milligan's children's story "Bad Jelly The Witch".
A couple of years ago my sister sent me a CD of the show which I now play to my kids. They love it as much as I do and I still remember many of the lines. Even as an adult, with all of the fun beaten out of my, I think it is a wonderful story – it helps that it uses the word "bottom" a couple of times, something I must add to my own book.
It's the silliest and cleverest children's book ever.
Someone has scanned the children's book and displayed it online. If you've young kids of your own then please trust me and read it to them … it is an utter, utter joy. You won't hear the same voices reading it as I do … but give it a go.
